About the main artist:
Leena Nammari is a Palestinian artist based in Edinburgh. She’s a master printmaker and she’s currently undertaking a practical PhD at DJCAD – University of Dundee. This exhibition will showcase some of her recent work which explores the idea of Haneen.
The Concept:
My PhD is a practice based one, titled: “An examination of the nature of Haneen: framing thoughts and representations on post-locational home and belonging”.
It is based on the exploration on the concept of haneen, how it can be reflected on Palestinians and other displaced communities and societies.
As a Palestinian, we live with haneen, every day. We wake to it, we walk with it, we dine on it, we go to bed thinking of it. We listen to music laced with it. Every memory is soaked with it. Every thought has a sense of haneen. The music we listen to, to the art we look at and make. We have haneen for all that has passed, and what is to come, anticipatory haneen. We build up a sense of haneen to places we have never visited. We build our sense of haneen from stories we have been told, stories we relay, and stories we make up.

Participating Artists
Along with work by Leena Nammari, the exhibition includes printmaking, sculpture and photography art by 15 members of Southwest Scotland Printmakers who are responding to the prompt of “Haneen”.
Members of SWSP have been asked to create work in response to Haneen, and what it means to them, expressed through their own ideas and techniques in Printmaking.
Following a zoom session in August, Leena’s proposal to the SWS Printmakers was to look at the idea of haneen and see how it is reflected in their lives. It is a sense of longing, or yearning, a sense of loss, and yet, it embeds a sense of identity and a sense of belonging. It has been described as a small hurt, piercing your heart, and yet, it’s what makes you feel alive. It is not nostalgia, it is a bigger force than that.
Displaced communities and societies do not have to come from a traumatic background. It could be someone who has move from Fife to Dumfries, from Glasgow to London, we all have haneen and build a mythology around what was lost, gained, found, discovered and missed.
